Anita Barreras

Biography

Anita Barreras, was born on January 2, 1881, in the New Mexico Territory during a period of significant transition in the American Southwest. Her birth came just over two decades after the United States acquired the territory following the Mexican-American War under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. The region was characterized by its diverse cultural heritage, with a strong presence of Hispanic settlers like her parents Desiderio Barreras and Maria Torres, who were both natives of the territory. She grew up with at least one sister, known as Maria de S. or Juana.

Jose Vigil's birth in 1876 came just over a decade after the conclusion of the American Civil War, during a period known as Reconstruction. His place of birth, Tome, was situated in the New Mexico Territory, which had been ceded to the United States by Mexico under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 following the Mexican-American War.
